A Senses Series Story

Howard Justinian has always had to fight for his freedom. Because he was born blind, everyone is always trying to shelter him, but he’s determined to live his life on his own terms.

When an argument with his boyfriend over that hard-won self-reliance leaves Howard stranded by the side of the road, assistance arrives in the form of Gordy Jarrett. Gordy is a missionary’s son, so helping others is second nature—and he does it in such an unassuming manner that Howard can’t say no.

Life is barely back on track when Howard receives shocking news his sister died, leaving him her daughter to care for. Howard now faces his greatest challenge yet for Sophia’s safety, he’ll need to accept help, but will he learn to accept it from Gordy, the one man who will not curb his independence?

I do this way too often, purchase a book and let it sit on my Carousel for weeks...sometimes months. I love most of this author's books so the not reading until yesterday was just crazy. I had planned on rereading LOVE COMES SILENTLY the first book in this series before I read this one. In a way I'm glad I didn't. It made the characters even the ones from the first book like new for me.
The opening scenes pulled me right in. I've read several other books featuring blind protagonists, but this one made me look at things using my other senses like Howard did. My heart was also involved a lot. I wanted to punch his former boyfriend. What a dirt bag! What a truly terrifying experience he had to endure because of that jerk. Then our hero comes along. Big strong compassionate with a rescue chariot (even if he didn't drive him anywhere). Gordon gave him a safe place to be until his friends came along. His friends from the first book were great. He could count on them for whatever he needed whether he asked for the assistance or not.
What I got out of this story is that independence comes with a price. Are you prepared to pay it? And sometimes independence could be an illusion. Howard may have been living alone but he was still a prisoner of his blindness. He had to learn to accept that help from others needn't come with conditions. That some people truly wanted to do what made his life easier.
There was so much happening in this second book in the series. Many of the things I enjoy reading about: overcoming cold feet, guide dog, great friends, crummy ex-, caring siblings, making your own family, finding your inner courage, dealing with profound grief, making the right choice after some questionable choices in your past, and not giving up after life gives you some hard knocks. I really look forward to reading the third in the Senses series.

Love Comes in Darkness Senses Series Book 2 edition by Andrew Grey Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

"..... a growl rumbled deeply in Gordy's throat. 'Dang," Howard murmured. 'Everything is certainly proportional."

Howard, blind since birth, uses his hands to replace his lack of eyesight. A trait that Gordy, Howard's new boyfriend, can more than appreciate. This is a book that shows a side of blindness that few understand but all should appreciate. Like most of Andrew Grey's books, it is not just a book about gay men but one with a deep message that reaches the heart of most readers. In this story, he tells how Howard handles being gay while coming to terms with being blind and independent. A perceptive story in his Senses series, Love comes in Darkness ranges from humor to in-depth information on the subject of blindness.

Above all, Grey emphasizes that just because you are blind does not mean you cannot have a normal life.
I wish I could give this a raving five star review, I love Andrew's writing and his books, but I just didn't love this one. I like it a lot, a whole lot, but can't quite say I loved it. Not too long before I read this book, I read a couple of really well written books about a blind man. They were so realistic, talked about labeling cans of food, clothing, personal care products. How this character lived, worked, fed himself, used a computer, lived in a house by himself, got around, etc. Really opened my mind up to how difficult it would be to be blind. This book by Andrew was a great book, but just didn't have the realism that the others I had just read did. I think if I had read Andrew's book first, I would have loved it, not knowing I was missing some details. It's not even Andrew's fault that I didn't love it!

This really is a sweet love story. Howard is a very strong, independent blind man, he fights so hard for his freedom and independence. Gordy comes in to his life when he is stuck on the side of the road, abandoned by his boyfriend. Drama happens, they fall in love, more drama happens, they end up creating a life together with Howard's niece and we assume they live happily ever after.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this story. I liked it a lot, I really did. There were some parts that were a bit predictable, but that's ok. The writing was good, the characters were well developed and wonderful, the sex was sweet and hot, it was a very good book. Just wish I hadn't read some incredible books about a very similar character just before I read it....
Another beautifully written novel in the Senses Series (#2) of True Love coming out of Emotional Drama. Again Andrew's character development was phenomenal with two gay men who meet under unusual circumstances. Howard, who is a blind man (from birth) is left stranded by his current boyfriend on the road, when another man, Gordy stops and helps him while he waits for his friends, Ken and Patrick. The two of them meet up again the next day at a party and things seem to start flying at that time. Everything seems to be going great until Howard gets a call telling him his older sister has died in a car accident and his neice, Sophia, is now alone. Howard and Gordy drive up to where they lived to take care of everything. Emotions fly, with Howard who demands his independence being blind and Gordy trying to help all he can. The love between them is evident, but both are unsure what all of it meant for a future between them now that things were changing with Sophia now coming to live with Howard. This is one of those emotional rollercoasters that keeps you on the edge of your seat with some tears along the way. The connection of the first story and this one is Ken and Patrick which adds a lot to this story. I couldn't put it down. This is definitely a must read for those who love MM Romance. Can't wait for the next installment.
