Dr. Grenfell's story of his missionary work to help fishermen in Labrador has possibility for great personal adventure, but his autobio evolves into a narrative of his strong Christian beliefs in improving conditions for the inhabitants and his crusades against alcohol in Labrador. A small irritant for me was his tendency to "name names" of his donors and supporters throughout the story. I enjoy biography and adventure, so the location and people enticed me to finish the book. From his book, Dr. Grenfell obviously did excellent work throughout his life, appeared to be broadminded about religion, was clear about the harm alcohol abuse wreaked on the poor Labrador families and communities, and seemed humble about his accomplishments. His narrative is weakened by his failure to capture the details and essense of the real people fishing and living in the harsh Labrador climate in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.Product details

I knew nothing of Wilfred Grenfell until reading this book. It is a fascinating account of the highs and lows of working in remote areas with virtually no support systems that we might expect in the current day. Testimony to what can be achieved when dedicated people believe in what they are doing.
I found this to be a fascinating story. What an amazing man! He writes the tale of his missionary work in morthern Newfoundland and Labrador with enthusiasm and good humor. His was an inspiring life.
Very small print. Unable to read with my aging eyes
Grenfell was an amazing man and this book describes why that was so, from his childhood to his amazing medical, social and educational work for 30+ years among the people living in remote and unbelievably harsh conditions in Labrador. It was an interesting and rewarding book to read.
It doesn't get better than this. It is amazing that a book of such quality is available for free. I would have been prepared to pay for it. Sir Wilfred Grenfell was knighted for his work in Labrador. He had an absolutely exciting life and his story telling ability is second to none. This book reads better than fiction.
This was a very interesting book to me. Not only is it well written, it tells of how things were over a century ago. I not only learned about a great man but much about Labrador I would never have known had I not read the book.

Dr. Grenfell lived a very interesting life in service to others. A good look into life in Labrador and Newfoundland. Nautical terminology and things about ships were a little out of my vocabulary, so I missed some comprehension of this aspect of the story. Some vocabulary not in dictionaries. Certainly an admirable man on a generous and kind mission.
